COPE,
CHRISTIAN OUTREACH PROGRAM OF ELKHORN
COPE is the Christian Outreach Program of Elkhorn, and is one of our key outreach partners for local ministry.
We are one of over a dozen parishes that participates in COPE within the Elkhorn area and beyond. Here are some ways our members are involved with COPE ministries. Their website can be viewed here: https://copeinfo.org/what-we-do/ (They accept text messages for immediate help)
Bread Deliveries ("Dough Boys")
Each Tuesday morning, St Augustine’s members meet at HyVee on 180th and Pacific to pick up bakery bread that is near the sale date and has been designated as surplus, and help transport it to COPE’s food pantry. This steady chore helps families in need have access to an inexpensive staple.
Clothing Drives
Throughout the year, COPE accepts good-condition clothing donations for redistribution to families in need. COPE is always willing to accept a donation, and we occasionally hold parish drives to call attention to this opportunity for Christian outreach.
Back to School Drive
Each summer COPE helps collect supplies for families in need so that students can go back to school with the same supplies that other kids have. We also assist with volunteer staffing to help kids go “shopping” for supplies towards the end of the summer.
Food Pantry Donations
COPE runs the Western Douglas County Food Pantry, and food donations are welcome throughout the year. As with clothing supplies, we occasionally hold special drives to call attention to this need.
Milk Ministry
Beginning in 2023, St Augustine used a small grant of "seed money" to partner with local grocers to buy bulk discounted milk gallons for donation to COPE. COPE is able to house a small number of these each week in their existing refrigerator spaces, and our St A's Dough Boys help to make the deliveries. We challenged other participating churches to take up their own collections to keep the milk runs going year-round, and COPE has been able to rise to meet that need as well!
Adopt-a-Family Christmas Gifts
St A's and other member churches divide up requests to help families purchase Christmas gifts for families and individuals. This list comes to our church in late-Fall so the gifts can be purchased and returned in time to be given to families!
Canned Food Christmas Tree
Each year we create a “Christmas Tree” during Advent out of ranks of food supplies, as a reminder to serve hungry families through this time. In the midwinter weeks after Christmas and Epiphany, the tree itself is also broken down and supplies are sent to Downtown Episcopal Outreach and COPE.
Financial Assistance
COPE is always willing to accept a direct financial donation to its programs and ministry in our area, and many of our members give generously. COPE is also one of the annual recipients of one of our designated monthly outreach offerings.
