OUTREACH PROGRAMS
We encourage everyone at St Augustine’s to be involved with at least one of our Outreach ministries.
hese are ministries that a parish member leads, coordinated through our Outreach Committee. Several of our key ministries are partnerships with organizations. Some of them we support financially, while others call for volunteer time, or activities such as donation drives of canned goods or school supplies.
Our goal is that our Outreach lets us “Love our neighbors as ourselves,” and that we grow in our own faith and relationship with God and neighbor by participating in programs that make a difference. Here are some of the programs we’re involved with: COPE, the Christian Outreach Program of Elkhorn COPE is one of our major partners. They coordinate a food pantry, clothing donations, and several other services through a staff of several social workers and an executive director. About a dozen churches in Elkhorn participate in supporting the work of COPE to provide and connect resources in Western Douglas County, and we frequently invite our members to be a part of their projects, often through donation drives. Each year, we have at least one member serve on COPE’s board. Magdalene Omaha Magdalene Omaha/Thistle Lights is a powerful two-year residential recovery and economic empowerment program for women who survived sex trafficking, addiction, and abuse. Their program offers long-term housing, access to key services, and job training—all for free. We support this work financially, and by partnering with the Magdalene program throughout the year for projects and fun events.
DEO, Downtown Episcopal Outreach Every Wednesday, volunteers from the cathedral and nearby Episcopal churches prepare a delicious lunch to distribute downtown. It's our small way of offering good food and fellowship to our neighbors, especially those who don't always have access to food. Meals are prepared and distributed to various encampments downtown on Wednesday mornings. Food prep begins at 7 AM, and meal delivery begins at 10:30 AM. Contact Richard Kruger for more information about purchasing food or volunteering as an individual or a group. |
The Rainbow Initiative Refugee MinistryThe Rainbow Initiative promotes support for people who have fled their countries because of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and/or sex characteristics.
We are part of the organized effort to educate our community and surrounding communities about the plight of LGBTQ+ forced migrants, and raise support amongst our fellow Episcopalians in Nebraska. Community members are preaching and teaching here at St. Augustine as discern what ways we can be of service further with this ministry. You can find more information, and learn how to be of service HERE.
The Benedictine Way
The Benedictine Way works with a variety of churches and community partners in their ministry in North Omaha and the greater Omaha area. Together, we work to do God’s healing work in the world and care for the poor and forgotten. We help by offering monetary donations, as well as volunteerism at St. Benedicts Food Pantry.
Read Me A Story (RMAS)
RMAS is a prison ministry that brings children’s books to incarcerated people so they can read a bedtime story to their child or grandchild. The inmate chooses a book for the child and is recorded reading the book. The book and the recording are then sent to the child. Prayers are said for the reader, the children and their family. This program promotes reading, family ties and hope for a better future for the incarcerated person and their family. Please contact Deacon Rebecca for more information, or to find out how you can help!
Fricke Episcopal Community Ministry
The Fricke Episcopal Community Ministry is a non-profit organization designed to help anyone in the greater Omaha area when they are in need. At present, we are concentrating on helping schools provide materials to the students that they are not able to provide, mostly hygiene supplies such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products. We help by holding drives for needed products.
Red Cross Blood Drives
About every 16 weeks, we hold a blood drive here at St. A. One of our beloved members who is living with Metastatic Breast Cancer wanted to give help give back. She knows what it feels like to receive the life giving gift of blood. Amy is not able to give herself, but has poured so much love and energy into this drive that to date, we as a community have donated 227 units of blood! 11% of that was from first time donors, most of whom donate for their love of Amy. We hope to see you at the next drive!
Special Funds
As part of our general commitment to supporting Christian Outreach, we contribute to several funds that are able to make a dollar go farther than we are locally. We do this by taking up a special Monthly Offering. To see a full list, please CLICK HERE
These include:
Episcopal Relief and Development program that offers national and international aid in response to both crises and development goals
United Thank Offering that gathers contributions given in gratitude and uses them to fund outreach initiatives
Theological Education Fund that supports the training of new priests, deacons, and lay members of the parish, including some of those in our Education for Ministry program
COPE Milk Ministry that purchases milk for our neighbors at COPE. Our church was gifted $500 to be used for a food ministry. The Outreach Committee discussed possibilities, and decided that we should use it to buy milk for our neighbors at COPE. It was such a great success that other churches have started donating "milk money" as well.
